Frederique Trunk: Alsatian jazzwoman in NYC

Frederique was born in Colmar and graduated in 1986 from the Conservatoire de Musique de Strasbourg with honors in Piano, Ear Training and Theory. She was also awarded a diploma in Musicology from the University des Sciences Humaines de Strasbourg. In 1992, Frederique came to New York to study Jazz piano and harmony at the New School’s Jazz and contemporary Music Program. She has studied Jazz piano and composition privately with Richie Beirach, Kirk Nurock, and William Allaudin Mathieu and perfected her classical piano technique and teaching skill with Madeleine Bruser.

As a soloist and bandleader, Frederique has toured in Europe, Morocco, Japan, USA and Canada. She performs in New York in many different settings and musical combinations from solo piano to quartets, quintets, and larger groups such as salsa bands.

French election in New York

Two distinguished members of L’Union Alsacienne, Guy Wildenstein and Renaud Granel were candidates on the Union Pour Un Mouvement Populaire list for elections at the Conseil supérieur des Français de l’étranger. For the first time this year, registered voters were able to cast their ballot via the Internet.

April 8, 2002 : During the ending ceremony of an Alsatian international gathering in Castroville, The Little Alsace of Texas, representative of the Texan community called on the other representatives from Alsace to preserve the Alsatian language, as the strongest tie between Alsatians through the world.

October 19, 2002 : Taking the opportunity of the presence of Adrien Zeller, President of the Region Alsace and François Brunagel, President of the International Union of Alsatian in the world, L’Union Alsacienne organized a gathering on Liberty Island in the shadow of the Statue of Liberty, to sign the Liberty Island Declaration under which several Alsatian organizations pledged to support the establishment in the United States of a Foundation for the Preservation of the Alsatian Language, to make the Foundation a success, and to promote its subject in our respective Alsatian communities to preserve Alsatian, the mother language of the Statue of Liberty.

While the process on creating the Foundation is going on, L’Union Alsacienne already received $1272 worth of spontaneous donations for this project aiming at gathering $10 000/year to support the opening of an Alsatian speaking Kindergarten in Alsace.

You too can make a contribution by writing a check payable to “L’Union Alsacienne/AlsaceLiberty Fund” and mailing it to Richard Emmich, Treasurer of L’Union Alsacienne

A raffle will be organized next year for this Fund, and the 25 Alsatians organizations through the world will be invited to make a contribution to this Fund aiming at preserving our common mother language, the mother language of the Statue of Liberty.

According to a 1993 study, Alsatian is now spoken by fewer than 10 per cent of Alsatian children under the age of 10. Also according to the latest census, 548,000 people still speak the language, out of a total population of 1,700,000.

The creation of an American Foundation to further the objective of promoting Alsatian has been proposed as the most effective contribution by Americans living abroad (particularly in the United States) to this worthy cause. Its major goal will be to raise funds to provide facilities for the first Alsatian-language Kindergarten and to offer access to a bilingual education to students who would otherwise be denied such an opportunity.

8 members of L’Union Alsacienne made Texan of the Day !

8 members of L’UA got a few months ago their certificate, signed by Congressman Tracy King, making Jean Alfano, Simone Kellner-Mc-Intee, Jacqueline Kempf, Eugenie Klatte, Paulette Ley, Cécile Schlur, Honorary President Sonia Schmitt, and Thierry Kranzer, Texan of the Day, for their participation April 8, 2002 at the Granting of the Alsatian House donated by Alsace to the Little Alsace of Texas. They also became honorary citizens of the Little Alsace of Texas!

We plan to visit the Little Alsace of OHIO during Labor Day week-end (August 29 /September 1). The Little Alsace of Ohio has been founded the 14^th July 2002 by a group of ALSATIANS.

The draft program is the following :

- Friday 29 August 7 pm : We’ll leave Manhattan in a van (7 seats). It’s an 8 hour trip. We’ll drive four hours and stay overnight midway between NYC and New Philadelphia (OH).

- Saturday 30 August 9 am : After breakfast we could take a tour of Gettysburg (Civil War site).

- Saturday in the afternoon : We arrive in the New Philadelphia area to visit the “Little Swiss” (Sugar Creek), also the village of Strasburg. We’ll also take an historical train (1 hour) through the Amish country (Ohio has the biggest Amish community in the world (50 000) .

-Saturday night : Alsatian dinner with zwiebeln and flammekuchen at the historical Zoar tavern with members of the Little Alsace of Ohio

-Sunday 31 August: Visit of vineyards, BBQ/picnic on the shores of a lake (and may be a tour on a boat), visit of very famous big cheese and big wine shop. For Sunday everyone can make suggestions about tourism opportunities in Tuscarawa County : www.neohiotravel.com/

Un Canadien d’origine alsacienne Grand officier de l’Ordre national du Québec

Le D^r William Howard Feindel né à Bridgewater (Nouvelle- Écosse), en 1918 s’est vu décorer Grand officier de l’Ordre national du Québec l’année dernière. Celui qui ne manque pas de faire référence à ses ancêtres alsaciens arrivés à Halifax en 1752 est diplômé en médecine de l'Université McGill et a obtenu, à titre de boursier de la fondation Cecil Rhodes, un doctorat en philosophie de l'Université d'Oxford. Depuis, il a été associé à l'Institut neurologique de Montréal, sauf pendant un séjour de quatre ans à l'Université de la Saskatchewan afin d'y mettre sur pied un département de neurochirurgie. Strasbourg : Une villa pour Tomi Ungerer

Le conseil municipal de Strasbourg a approuvé hier l'engagement d'une démarche devant aboutir à la création d'un Centre de l'illustration présentant l'oeuvre graphique de Tomi Ungerer dans la villa Greiner, bâtiment de la fin du XIXe siècle situé à un angle de l'avenue de la Marseillaise, en face du TNS. La matière ne manque pas pour garnir le futur Centre de l'illustration : en 1975 et en 1991, Tomi Ungerer a fait à la ville de Strasbourg deux donations représentant, outre les jouets, près de 8 000 dessins originaux ainsi qu'un millier d'affiches et d'estampes

Les parlementaires alsaciens reçus par le Ministre alsacien François LOOS.

François Loos, a reçu à Paris mardi 6 mai, les parlementaires et présidents des collectivités alsaciennes. Le ministre du Commerce extérieur a fait une présentation des pays cibles pouvant servir de débouchés aux entreprises alsaciennes. Les élus ont également évoqué la défense des TGV, et insisté sur la nécessité d'en faire comprendre l'importance non seulement pour l'Alsace mais pour le développement européen de la France. Ils insisteront sur la dimension européenne et le lien nécessaire avec l'Allemagne pour plaider en faveur du tronçon Baudrecourt- Strasbourg du TGV Est. Autre sujet sur lequel les parlementaires alsaciens veulent faire front commun : la desserte aérienne de Strasbourg. André Schneider, député UMP du Bas-Rhin, a demandé un rendez-vous avec le PDG d'Air France, au nom de tous les élus alsaciens. A noter que le Ministre alsacien est annoncé cette année à New York et qu’il a exprimé le souhait de rencontrer la communauté des Alsaciens de New York. Un député corse à New York

Le Dr Simon Renucci, Député-Maire d’Ajaccio, a rendu visite à la communauté corse de New York durant la première semaine du mois de mai. Après une réception à l’Hôtel Sofitel, le lundi 6 mai, à destination de la communauté francophone, le député corse a participé à un dîner avec la communauté corse, qui s’est tenu mardi soir au restaurant La Côte Basque. L’Union Alsacienne était représentée à l’occasion de cette manifestation. Cette soirée a vu la diffusion d’un reportage sur la vie des Corses à New York ainsi qu’un discours du député Renucci. Trois Alsaciens au Football Club

Beaucoup l’ignorent, mais un club français est engagé dans un championnat de football (soccer) américain. Il s’agit du Stade breton de New York, depuis 1956. Trois Alsaciens font aujourd’hui la richesse de ce club, Alex Douzet, venant de Richwiller, Kami Ansirajet, qui a vécu à Strasbourg et Thierry Kranzer, originaire de Obersaasheim.

Judaïsme alsacien……lorrain

Ron Pittner s'est éteint. A Colmar- Installé à Colmar depuis treize ans, le batteur américain de jazz Ron Pittner est décédé le 12 mai 2003, à l'âge de 69 ans, des suites d'un cancer. Né à Santa Monica, en Californie, il a rejoint la France en 1965 pour ne pas participer à la guerre du Viet-Nam. Il découvre alors les clubs de jazz parisiens, rencontre Dexter Gordon, Memphis, Slim, Steve Lacy, Ornette Coleman...  Après un séjour aux Etats-Unis, il s'installe définitivement dans la capitale française en 1970 où il se produit en concert avec ses groupes : Free Exit puis Out of Lunch. C'est en 1990 qu'il posa ses valises à Colmar. Il y créa une émission de jazz sur la radio associative RDL, fonda l'association Jazz à Colmar, et fut conseiller artistique du festival de jazz de Colmar, au cours duquel il enregistra ses derniers albums live avec son quintette. Sa dernière apparition remonte à septembre 2002, lors du concert d'ouverture du festival donné à Sélestat.   

BBQ –Pétanque in NYC

Un groupe de jeunes Alsaciens s’est réuni vendredi 30 mai autour d’un BBQ-pétanque sur Roosevelt Island, des jeunes originaires de Saint Louis, Colmar, Strasbourg, Wissembourg et ....même de la Moselle  et de Karlsruhe !!

Sarre/Saarland

« Le français va devenir la 2è langue officielle dans l'administration en Sarre, a annoncé hier le chef du gouvernement de la Sarre. Les formulaires et les documents de l'administration sarroise seront à l'avenir imprimés dans les deux langues, a précisé Peter Mueller. L'objectif est d'encourager la pratique du bilinguisme dans cette région qui bénéfice de subventions européennes pour de telles initiatives. », paru dans les Dernières Nouvelles d’Alsace du 6 Mai 2003.

is the number of children following a bilingual education in elementary schools in Alsace, in more than 300 bilingual classes, out of 7000 (140 000 pupils) from the Region Alsace. Since 1992, it is possible - in theory - but always difficult in practice for parents- to ask for a bilingual education for their children (13 hours German/13 hours French a week). In more and more classes Alsatian dialect is added in Kindergarten.

is the number of yearly visitor’s of the Ecomusée in Ungersheim (Alsace). This village of 150 old houses has been started in the 80s with an enthusiastic group of volunteers and local organizations who saved dozens of old houses from destruction through the whole region. They began to rebuild them into what is now known as the “Ecomuseum of Alsace”. This beautiful village is a walk through crafts and techniques of the past. There are exhibits of cobblers, blacksmiths, bakers, oil-pressers and even houses under primitive construction. Don’t miss it when in Alsace, Ecomusée d’Ungersheim, between Colmar and Mulhouse.

are the new initials of the former ORBI (Office Regional du Bilinguisme/Regional Office for Bilingualism). The OLCA (Office pour la langue et culture alsacienne/Office for the Alsatian language and Culture ) has been directed to focus especially on the way to promote the dialect in the society in the other fields as education.

1983…

Creation of the Stork organization “APRECIAL” to reintroduce this endangered species. In 1983 only 7 couples of storks were left in the region. 10 years after the initiative of Senator Henri Goetschy, President of the Upper Alsace Council, more than a thousand storks have been counted in Alsace.

A propos de traditions alsaciennes….. STRASBOURG (Reuters) 23 mai 2003- Les surveillants du centre de détention de Toul (Meurthe-et-Moselle) ont découvert 12 litres d'alcool artisanal et du matériel de distillation dans la cellule d'un détenu.

Issu d'un milieu nomade alsacien, ce braqueur de banques condamné à 16 ans de prison se faisait bouilleur de cru la nuit grâce à un tube de cuivre, un récipient en plastique et une simple casserole qu'il mettait à chauffer sur une plaque électrique.

L'alcool, fabriqué à partir de pommes et de poires récoltées à la cantine ou auprès d'autres détenus, était "bon", voire "très bon", a précisé à Reuters le capitaine Bruno Dauphin, ajoutant qu'il fallait "un certain doigté" pour obtenir le même titrage, 59 ou 60°, sur chaque litre produit.

Le seau de vingt litres dans lequel les fruits étaient mis à fermenter était caché dans un placard, un plastique scotché sur l'orifice pour empêcher que les effluves ne titillent les narines des surveillants. Sans livrer toute la recette, l'officier de police a révélé que 16 kilos de fruit et deux kilos de sucre étaient mis en oeuvre pour sortir 30 centilitres d'alcool.

Le prisonnier, qui ne bénéficiait ni de visite, ni de permission de sortie, utilisait sa production pour sa consommation personnelle, mais aussi pour faire du troc avec les autres détenus.

Placé en garde à vue, le distillateur amateur sera convoqué devant la justice en août. La date de sa sortie, prévue en 2005, sera probablement repoussée de quelques mois

Alsacien : une charte fait loi

Les auteurs alsaciens et plus largement tous ceux qui écrivent le dialecte ont désormais à leur disposition une charte leur permettant d'harmoniser l'écriture des mots alsaciens. (Dernières Nouvelles d’Alsace 9 juin 2003)

Fin mai, quelque 80 spécialistes de l'alsacien participaient à Colmar à l'invitation d'Albert Hudlett, géolinguiste, à un colloque visant à harmoniser la façon d'écrire le dialecte. Cette rencontre a réuni, du nord au sud de l'Alsace, de nombreuses personnes faisant autorité dans ce domaine : professeurs, grammairiens, journalistes, chanteurs... Après une journée de débats fructueux, les participants ont voté à une large majorité l'adoption de la charte élaborée par le Pr Hudlett. Ce dernier a qualifié la journée de « mémorable », puisqu'elle a permis, au-delà de la diversité des parlers à laquelle on ne touche pas, de trouver un terrain d'entente pour écrire le dialecte. Le texte de ce document accompagné d'une convention d'écriture, sera diffusé dans les semaines à venir auprès des associations et cercles concernés par le dialecte. Il est aussi à la disposition de toute personne intéressée par le sujet (s'adresser au département d'allemand de la faculté de Mulhouse au * 03 89 33 60 91 ou bien envoyer un e-mail : This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it ). L'objectif de cette charte est de donner une grille de lecture commune afin de faciliter à tous l'accès aux textes alsaciens, notamment aux étudiants. Jusqu'à ce jour, la diversité des graphies de l'alsacien nécessitait un déchiffrage fastidieux.

At the end of May, a panel of experts of the Alsatian language met in Colmar and adopted a charter to transcribe the various pronunciations of Alsatian while easing the task of the readers, especially the students.
